Antarctica Expedition Review
ANTARCTICA
Dating back to the age of Antiquity, there’s been almost a romanticised belief in some mythical Terra Australis
(or ‘southern land’), balancing the world out between north and south. This southern continent remained a legend until it was first sighted in 1820, but the first confirmed landing wasn’t until 1895. However, Antarctica still conjures up romantic imagery and is still shrouded in mystery – and for many of us, an expedition cruise to Antarctica would indeed be the trip of a lifetime.
In the late 19
th and early 20
th centuries, exploration had a golden age; daring men sought personal and national glory, and determined to discover unchartered territories. The biggest prize of all was the South Pole, the very end of the Earth, and in 1911, a dramatic race unfurled between the English explorer, Sir Robert Falcon Scott and his team, and a group of Norwegians led by Roald Amundsen. The English were pipped to the post (or the Pole) by about four weeks, and their journey ended in tragedy.

ANTARCTICA EXPEDITION CRUISING
Today, it’s possible to experience the sheer majesty and wonder of Antarctica in much greater levels of comfort (and no frostbite). An expedition cruise to Antarctica comes in many shapes and forms, but offers the opportunity to cruise the Antarctica peninsula and land on this great, white continent.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ANTARCTICA?
The Antarctic cruise season is a truly magical time that spans from November to March, encompassing the period when the sea ice begins to break up. It kicks off in November with the spectacular sight of the largest icebergs adorning the icy waters, offering a breathtaking glimpse of the continent in all its pristine glory. This time of year allows visitors to witness nature in its purest form, with the vast landscapes and untouched beauty of Antarctica waiting to be explored and experienced.
Embarking on an Antarctic cruise during this season promises unforgettable moments.
Between December and January, the landscape comes alive with an abundance of natural wonders under blue skies. With a generous offering of 20 hours of sunshine each day, this period provides the perfect conditions for the adorable seal pups, charming penguin chicks, and majestic whales that call this region home.
By the end of the season, the rookeries are transformed into a lively spectacle of noise and activity, bustling with energy and excitement as the penguin chicks fledge, eagerly preparing to venture out into the waters of their Antarctic home. The air is filled with the sounds of cheerful squawks and flapping wings, creating a vibrant and chaotic atmosphere that reflects the bustling community of penguins as they begin their journey into the ocean.
WHERE DO YOU CRUISE FROM TO VISIT ANTARCTICA?
Many expedition cruises to Antarctica start from South America – typically Punta Arenas in Chile or Ushuaia in Argentina, offering an excellent opportunity to combine Antarctica with the dramatic beauty of the region of Patagonia, which straddles both countries.
WHAT CAN YOU DO IN ANTARCTICA?
Ashore, you can hike, cross-country ski, snow-shoe, mountaineer, get close to penguin colonies, discover research stations, or just take in the dramatic scenery surrounding you. Some cruise lines give you the opportunity to camp out on the Antarctic shores, or kayak in the Peninsula.
WHAT ANIMALS CAN YOU SEE IN ANTARCTICA
Antarctica is a land of extreme conditions and breathtaking beauty. Despite its harsh environment, this frozen continent is teeming with a variety of wildlife uniquely adapted to its cold climate. If you're planning a trip or simply fascinated by Antarctic fauna, here are some of the remarkable animals you can see in Antarctica.
PENGUINS
1. Emperor Penguins
The largest of all penguin species, Emperor penguins are the iconic residents of Antarctica. Standing nearly four feet tall, these majestic birds are renowned for their incredible endurance, breeding during the harshest winter conditions. Visitors can witness their impressive colonies, especially on the Antarctic Peninsula.
2. Adélie Penguins
Adélie penguins are smaller but equally fascinating. Known for their distinctive black and white plumage, these penguins are commonly found along the entire Antarctic coast. They are highly social and can often be seen in large groups, diving for krill and fish.
SEALS
1. Weddell Seals
These seals are the most southerly of all mammals, known for their unique ability to live under the sea ice. Weddell seals have remarkable diving capabilities, often staying underwater for up to an hour. They are a common sight on the icy shores of Antarctica.
2. Leopard Seals
Leopard seals are the top predators in the Antarctic waters, named for their distinctive spotted coats. These formidable hunters feed on a variety of prey, including penguins and fish. They are often seen lounging on ice floes or swimming near the shorelines.
WHALES
1. Humpback Whales
Humpback whales migrate to Antarctic waters during the summer months to feed on the abundant krill. Known for their acrobatic breaches and complex songs, humpback whales are a highlight for many visitors. Whale-watching tours often provide close-up views of these gentle giants.
2. Orcas
Also known as killer whales, orcas are actually a type of dolphin and are among the most intelligent marine predators. In Antarctica, they are often spotted hunting in packs, using sophisticated techniques to capture seals and penguins. Their striking black and white coloration makes them easy to identify.
BIRDS
1. Antarctic Petrels
These seabirds are a common sight above the frigid waters of Antarctica. With their striking black and white plumage and distinctive flight patterns, Antarctic petrels are a favorite among birdwatchers. They are often seen following ships, providing ample opportunities for observation.

2. Snow Petrels
Pure white and perfectly camouflaged against the icy landscape, snow petrels are one of the most beautiful birds in Antarctica. These petite birds nest on cliffs and rocky outcrops, where they can be seen gliding gracefully through the air.
