DAY 3 BRAHMAPUTRA RIVER CRUISE REVIEW
Not such an early start today with breakfast between 7am and 8am. As we glided along the Brahmaputra River to the island of Majuli, Payal, our guide, gave us an interesting account of the geography of the Brahmaputra.
A MORNING OF TRADITIONAL ASSAMESE MUSIC AND DANCE
The Brahmaputra River boasts a unique feature with both the world's largest and smallest inhabited islands. The Island of Majuli, the larger of the two, is a hidden gem that can only be reached by local ferries and small boats, providing a truly authentic and immersive experience for traveLlers seeking tranquility and natural beauty. Visitors can also explore the island's rich culture and heritage, making it a must-visit destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And for those seeking a touch of luxury and comfort, the exclusive guests of M.V. Mahabaahu can enjoy unparalleled access to this stunning island paradise.
When we reached the island, we took a rather rocky Jeep journey to a village temple near Garamur Satra, before heading down to the riverbanks where we were entertained by local performers! It seemed surreal to be watching all these beautiful, traditional dances in such a deserted place.
Back to our air-conditioned jeeps we drove on and visited the Kamalabari Satra, a religious centre dating back to 1673. Here we witnessed a devotional performance by the Vaishnavite Priests ‘Gayan Bayan’.
We watched local monks apply traditional makeup for a dance performance, and even got to visit their living quarters, which were situated within the grounds of the Satra. Boys as young as four can stay at the monastery, and are often sent there by their parents, in the hope that they might have a more privileged life.
AFTERNOON RIVER CRUISE
Back on board our river cruise, we enjoyed lunch as we sailed to another deserted island where we anchored overnight.
The four hour sail was a great opportunity to photograph the local fishermen and the children who ran to the riverbank to wave at us. We also saw some wonderful wildlife. Sadly I didn’t catch a shot of the Fresh River Dolphins (too quick for me!).
EVENING COCKTAILS ON A DESERTED ISLAND
After we safely anchored the boat offshore, we eagerly made our way to the deserted island, excited to explore its untouched beauty. As the sun began to set, we settled down on the sandy shore and savored evening cocktails while taking in the breathtaking views around us. The tranquility of the island, combined with the thrill of being in such a remote location, made it a truly unforgettable experience that will be etched in my memory forever. It's not every day that you have the opportunity to drop anchor on a deserted island, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
